For example, a phlebotomy technician who trains as a medical biller would not only be a greater asset to their employer, they would also be more marketable as they continue to seek employment opportunities in health care.

The focus of the professionally trained phlebotomy technician is to draw blood from patients. Once the blood is draw the technician then labels the tubes in accordance to the type of laboratory testing for which the patient is having the physician authorized blood work. In a large medical office, hospital, or patient care facility, most phlebotomist would just focus on whatever assigned duties they have regarding blood, which include: drawing of blood, labeling of tubes, preparation of tubes for lab pick up or delivery – mostly the administrative tasks associated with a phlebotomy technician. While the pay would be competitive and the work would be rewarding, the phlebotomy tech in this scenario would be part of a focused team that work best in their particular specialty. However, in an environment such as a doctor’s office, clinic, or facility where patients can walk in and request physician authorized blood work, this phlebotomy technician could better serve the supervisory staff with the additional knowledge of medical billing and medical coding knowledge, and therefore assist the facility in getting the necessary supporting document out in a timely and efficient manner, thus enabling payment to be received in a more timely manner.
training at www.manhattaninstitute.com I was looking for a job in an industry that I thought would be lucrative, but it kept me away from the crucial time I needed to be a mom to my 4 year old twins. I thought that working as a waitress would give me some flexibility, and being that I could earn good tips, I was thinking how this would help me until meet the additional babysitting expenses I sometimes incur as a single parent. I soon found that the long hours also required me to work either the early morning breakfast shift, which sometimes lasted right thru the lunch crowd, or nights and weekends, if I wanted to make the most money. Besides, I realized that I was not receiving any additional skills or training to make a better life for my family.

Wanting to acquire the skills for better career possibilities, and understanding that work in the healthcare industry might help me achieve my goals, after putting the girls to bed one night I did some research, on my mom’s computer and came across The Manhattan Institute. I liked the fact that they are conveniently located in midtown, which is easy for to get to from Brooklyn, and I could learn to be a phlebotomy technician in just 3 weeks. In three short weeks, I would have a certification that I could then use, with my resume and life skills, to begin interviewing for jobs with a future, doing something that I enjoy while helping and meeting new people.

I completed my training for this new and exciting career in Spring 2005 and within 3 weeks I starting working as an assistant to an RN at a large medical center in Brooklyn. I have been at this facility for almost 2 years now and have increased my pay, met lots of new people, have health insurance for my family, and feel that my life is now on the road to success

The Phlebotomy Technician is Ready To Help

Although one of the most important roles of the phlebotomy technician is to obtain quality blood specimens from patients for diagnostic laboratory testing , in many health care facilities their responsibilities also include entering patient data into laboratory computers, transporting specimens, and specimen preparation which may also include performing supervised simple tests. As the phlebotomy technician works directly with the patient, he or she must also act as the “eyes and ears” of the doctor and therefore relay any important information, that was gathered while collecting a blood specimen, to doctors, nurses, or laboratory supervisors. The collected specimens, once analyzed, aid the physician in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of the patient.

The well meaning phlebotomy technician who displays a warm and welcoming attitude and a professional demeanor will also provide additional value to the patient and therefore be a responsible and complimentary asset to any health care team.

Required Tools for Professional Phlebotomists

With the professional responsibility to draw blood from patients or blood donors in hospitals, blood banks, or similar facilities, a phlebotomist collects these blood samples for analysis or other medical purposes. Responsible technologists must also prepare specimens for proper examination, count cells, and have the ability to identify abnormal cells in blood and body fluids. The technicians are aided with the knowledge of automated equipment and computerized instruments capable of performing a number of tests simultaneously, as well as microscopes, cell counters, and other sophisticated laboratory equipment which gives the technicians sophisticated results which they then relay to physicians. As the clinical laboratory industry increases its utilization of advanced technology and increasing automation, the work of professionally qualified technologists and technicians has become less hands-on and more analytical.

Clinical laboratory workers must rely on the amount of education and experience they have, as well as a level of sound judgment, to competently relay, to both physicians and supervisors, the results of the complex testing and lab work performed in the labs in which they work.

Read more from the Department of Labor about Clinical Laboratory Technologists and Technicians
