Required Tools for Professional Phlebotomists
With the professional responsibility to draw blood from patients or blood donors in hospitals, blood banks, or similar facilities, a phlebotomist collects these blood samples for analysis or other medical purposes. Before greetings the patient or donor, the phlebotomist will first collect the necessary tools, in accordance with the specific test or procedural requirements, to ensure a successful specimen collection, some of which include: latex gloves, needles, tourniquet, blood collection devices, cotton, and alcohol.Specifically, the phlebotomist applies a tourniquet, either inserts
a needle into the vein or pricks the finger,
applies treatment to puncture site.
Once specimen collection is complete, the phlebotomist concludes this interaction with the patient by: labeling and storing blood containers, checking patient's vital signs, allaying patient's fears regarding the procedure and informing patient of any specific information as pre-discussed with physician
